Ebook About
A vivid, searching journey into California's capture of water and soil—the epic story of a people's defiance of nature and the wonders, and ruin, it has wroughtMark Arax is from a family of Central Valley farmers, a writer with deep ties to the land who has watched the battles over water intensify even as California lurches from drought to flood and back again. In The Dreamt Land, he travels the state to explore the one-of-a-kind distribution system, built in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, that is straining to keep up with California's relentless growth. The Dreamt Land weaves reportage, history and memoir to confront the "Golden State" myth in riveting fashion. No other chronicler of the West has so deeply delved into the empires of agriculture that drink so much of the water. The nation's biggest farmers—the nut king, grape king and citrus queen—tell their story here for the first time.Arax, the native son, is persistent and tough as he treks from desert to delta, mountain to valley. What he finds is hard earned, awe-inspiring, tragic and revelatory. In the end, his compassion for the land becomes an elegy to the dream that created California and now threatens to undo it.

Book The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water and Dust Across California Review :

With the deaths of Jim Harrison and Jonathan Gold in the last few years, Mark Arax is now my favorite living writer when it comes to structuring a sentence. He writes nonfiction that in many sections reads like poetry. If you are from California, if you are interested in California, if you are fascinated by the intricacies of how the state functions (it is more complex than all but a handful of countries in the world)... this book is must read. Hell, even if you don't care about any of those things, but you just enjoy quality writing, it's on sale for under 20 bucks. I would recommend it at twice the price.I never thought any book could approach the scope of Cadillac Desert, which remains one of the 20 best books I have ever read. (My uncle gave me a copy for Christmas when I was a child and 25 years later I still occasionally thumb through and re-read my favorite chapters, though the front and back covers long ago fell off.) But damn, this book... well, I'm not going to say it's an equal after only one reading, but it is a very important companion piece.
The Dreamt Land tackles The Other California -- the often neglected great Central Valley. Arax is a master at conjuring word-pictures that can captivate readers: "Twenty miles outside Fresno, I cross the Kings, the river that irrigates more farmland than any other river here. There's a mountain range to my left and a mountain range to my right and in between a plain flatterthan Kansas where crop and sky meet." Water, and who contols its distriution is a main theme of the book.A Fresno native with decades of exposure to Valley culture, Arax was destined to write this book and is , perhaps, the only person who could do justice to such a vast subject. With several acclaimed books under his belt, his latest one puts Arax in the select class of three other iconic Valley authors: William Saroyan (also a Fresno native and a fellow Armenian), Joan Didion and John Steinbeck. These three worthies devoted parise-worthy prose to relatively small snippets of the Valley while Arax undertook the garantuan task of making sense of the entire valley. That he succeeded represents a gift to readers everywhere. At 528 pages, The Dreamt Land may be intimidating to some, but the book is divided into 21 easily digestible chapters, many of them stand-alone mini-books. Those that purchase this book will be amply rewarded.
